A. Reconciled Evaluation Regimes: 30-Epoch Full Convergence vs. 15-Epoch Focal-Loss Test Split HAM10000 (10,015 Total / N=1,503 Test)

To ensure complete scientific transparency, Tashkhees reports both the 30-epoch full convergence training regime (weighted accuracy & macro F1) and the raw 15-epoch Focal-Loss (γ=2.0) + Inverse-Frequency WeightedRandomSampler checkpoint exported in results/vit_test_predictions.csv (N = 1,503 test images), which prioritizes minority-class sensitivity and achieves 0.9743 Macro ROC-AUC and 96.3% Mean Specificity.

Patient-Level Zero-Leakage Protocol (lesion_id Grouping) StratifiedGroupKFold

The HAM10000 archive contains 10,015 dermoscopic images acquired from 7,470 distinct lesions (multiple magnifications or follow-up captures per lesion_id). Naive image-level random splitting risks placing sibling frames of the same lesion in both training and test sets. For clinical-grade validation, Tashkhees enforces group-isolated splitting by lesion_id:

from sklearn.model_selection import StratifiedGroupKFold
import pandas as pd

df = pd.read_csv("data/raw/HAM10000_metadata.csv")

# Guarantee zero multi-view lesion overlap between Train and Test folds
sgkf = StratifiedGroupKFold(n_splits=5, shuffle=True, random_state=42)
train_idx, test_idx = next(
    sgkf.split(df, y=df["dx"], groups=df["lesion_id"])
)

assert set(df.iloc[train_idx]["lesion_id"]).isdisjoint(
    set(df.iloc[test_idx]["lesion_id"])
), "CRITICAL: Patient lesion_id leakage detected!"
